Eid Al Fitr

There are two main celebrations in Islam, one of them is Eid Al Fitr. In some countries it is also called Idul Fitri or Eidul Fitr. It starts on the 1st day of Shawwal, which is the 10th month in the Hijri calendar. During this 3-day festival Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan.

This is the day of thanksgiving to Allah that He gave the opportunity to Muslims to enjoy the blessing of Ramadan.

The ceremony starts early morning with a worship service. This is usually held in a large open area where hundreds of Muslims can get together. After the prayer, a short sermon is delivered and then the people greet each other.

The rest of the ceremonies are held privately: People invite and visit each other. Every family kills lamb or goat and they share the food with the relatives, friends and the poorer members of their community.

Children receive gifts, some money and new clothes.

If you plan to travel during Eid al Fitr, keep in mind that these days are public holidays in Muslims countries, so government offices and banks are closed. Public transport services may also be limited.
Tourists sites are usually open but it may vary from one country to the other.
Shops and markets are open as usual, it is actually a very busy time for retailers, especially the ones selling clothes and sweets.

Eid Al Fitr is also a school holiday, so resorts usually get very crowded with families and hotel prices tend to skyrocket this time of the year.
